Becky James is the Chief Public Defender for Atascosa Area Advocates. Ms. James has over 30 years of legal experience. She received both her undergraduate degree and her law degree from Stanford University (A.B. '87, J.D. '90). Following law school, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable Pamela Ann Rymer on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She later became an Assistant United States Attorney in Los Angeles, California, where she held the positions of Chief and Deputy Chief of the General Crimes Section and Chief of the Criminal Appeals Section. For the 15 years prior to becoming Chief, Ms. James was in private practice, representing criminal defendants in complex cases in federal and state courts.

One of Ms. James's more notable representations was as part of the trial team representing Bill Cosby in his criminal retrial. She has also achieved numerous wins for clients, including dismissals, reversals, acquittals, releases from civil contempt, and probationary and reduced sentences.
